NPMP helps facilitate leadership retreats and seminars for BJMP wardens

National Capital Region Seminar

Two leadership seminars and retreats on leadership and managing conflicts were conducted for wardens of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) regional districts were held on June 16 and 17 and 24 and 25.

The first seminar on June 16 and 17 was held in Legaspi City for the BJMP wardens and jail officers in Bicol region. More than 50 participants attended the event that was facilitated jointly by Dr. Rey Taniajura, Chairman of the National Prison Ministries Philippines, Inc. (NPMP) and Atty. Roy Valenzuela of the BJMP’s national legal service.

The second seminar-retreat held on June 24 and 24 were attended by wardens and jail officers of the National Capital Region (NCR). Close to 60 officers of the BJMP NCR participated in the event that was held at the BJMP national headquarters in Quezon City. Similar topics were covered by Dr. Taniajura and Atty. Valenzuela in the NCR leadership seminar.

NPMP’s RJ program reaches barangay level

Convinced that the principles of Restorative Justice could help the Lupon (barangay council), Engineer Gilbert U Rivera, Chairman of Barangay 174 in Caloocan City, Metro Manila agreed to have National Prison Ministries Philippines’ (NPMP) Restorative Justice program introduced to members of his Lupon, barangay tanod (community police) and staff last April 10, 2008.

NPMP Chair teaches RJ at JNTI

Issue No. 9 (Apr-May 2008)

On April 14, Dr. Rey Taniajura, Chairman of the NPMP, was again invited to teach Restorative Justice at the Jail National Training Institute (JNTI). This was Dr. Taniajura’s second stint of teaching RJ at the training arm of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP). The NPMP and BJMP have an existing memorandum of agreement to promote Restorative Justice and its adjunct program, the Sycamore Tree Project, among BJMP’s personnel and inmates.

Prison ministry workers in Bicol meet with NPMP officials

Members of the Bicol Region Prison Ministry, Inc. (BRPMI) met with Dr. Rey Taniajura and Atty. Roy Valenzuela at the BJMP regional office in Legaspi City last May 2. Atty. Valenzuela is the Vice Chairman of NPMP and head of the legal service of the BJMP’s national office.

Covenant Leaders Network takes active role in reconciliation and restoration

The Covenant Leaders Network (CLN) of Palawan has picked up the challenge to respond in the call for reconciliation and restoration. In a recent meeting with the Executive Director of National Prison Ministries Phils. Inc., CLN has understood its role in the vision shared by Brother Virgilio Gozon of the Integrated Iwahig Ex-Inmates Group (IWAHEiG). IWAHEiG sees the integration of ex-inmates to the various communities of Palawan citing historical underpinnings.
